Let’s Talk Preservatives

We love natural organic products so why do some of our products use a preservative?

First let’s define what a preservative does:

A preservative is an anti-microbial solution that helps to prevent mold, yeast, and bacteria from growing in your products. Preservatives are needed in any product that has water in it to prevent bacteria and mold from growing in it. Without the use of a preservative the shelf life of your product is very short, a few days sitting out on the counter and you can extend it a little further if you keep in the fridge. Products containing water without any preservatives can and will grow bacteria such as e.coli and staphylococcus and mold will begin it’s process early on. Most commercial companies selling at department stores use heavy doses of preservatives and harsh chemicals as they know their product may sit on a shelf for a long period of time before ever being purchased. This ensures that the customer will receive a product free of bacteria.

We aim to create our products as they are requested and in small batches ensuring their freshness without the use of preservatives and harsh chemicals. However,  we will use the lowest amounts of preservative possible in our products that do contain water so that you will have time to use your product before it goes bad. Our shelf life is about 6 months.

Our preservative of choice is called Optiphen Plus. It’s a broad spectrum antimicrobial preservative that is paraben and formaldehyde-free. Optiphen-Plus contains a mixture of three parts: Phenoxyethanol, which prevents microbial growth and has a broad range of anti-fungal properties; Caprylyl Glycol, which is naturally derived from coconut (which is food-grade) and protects against microbial growth from bacteria and yeast, and Sorbic Acid, which has anti-microbial properties and is derived from the berries of the mountain ash. We use just enough to extend the shelf life of the product to about 6 months without any mold, yeast, or bacteria growing in it.

If you are looking for a pure, preservative free line of products click on the “pure” category in our store front. The items in this category are all oil based (no water added) and therefore have no need for a preservative.
