What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing the dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin using an exfoliant. This can be natural and as simple as using a sponge, cloth, or brush, or by using a scrub (a product with sugar, salt, micro beads) to help massage away the dead skin. Other options also include products with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), these enzymes are used to loosen the glue-like substance that holds dead skin cells together so they are easily removed. Clay masks can also help to loosen and pull away the dead skin cells.
Why is exfoliation so important?
Getting rid of the dead skin cells will reveal healthier & brighter skin while allowing your skin care products to fully absorb into your skin. When you have dead skin cells built up on your skin, your skin care products may not be able to penetrate deep into the skin achieving their optimal results. By exfoliating, this will make it easier for your serums and lotions to sink deep below the surface where they can do their job properly.
This all sounds really great but what are the best ways to exfoliate each part of your body correctly and how often? Stay tuned, we will be doing a series of posts on exfoliation.
